The Weekly Newsletter for Heart of Houston Birth and Wellness Families and Friends
We Remember
Hello, dear ones. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month and we are going to take some time in this issue of the Bumpdate to honor those losses and the impact they have on us. If you are not in the emotional place to share this space with us that's okay, you can skip today's discussion and jump to the events. Our goal in highlighting pregnancy and infant loss is to remind folks that there is no time limit on grief. With all the attention on the reversal of Roe vs. Wade this past summer we've seen more discussion in the media about pregnancy and infant loss. No matter the gestational age, the loss of a wanted pregnancy or child can affect both the gestational parent and their partner. The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published a study in 2019 that showed that 27% of people who suffered a loss fit the criteria for a Posttraumatic Stress Disorder diagnosis one month out. Nine months later that number reduced to just under 18%. Nine months. Grief takes time.
Our friend and grief expert Jodie Gonzales, LCS of JAH Grief Services says she, "...wish everyone knew that grief is hard. That it isn’t something we can “get over” with three days of bereavement leave from work. That grief is a lifelong journey. And that it’s not something you have to do alone. I hope each grieving person has someone or someplace they can go to be honest about their experience and find meaningful support. Sadly, even those with very strong support systems often feel isolated after a loss because those supports don’t know how to help." There are many local and national resources available to help connect you to a mental health provider or support group, this is a great place to start. Remember that everyone will feel each loss differently but we are always here to walk beside you; know that you are not alone.
