About the event
IN Labor/AT Labor is an experiential, interactive course emphasizing our innate knowledge of how to give birth and the importance of mental and emotional aspects of birthing. Classes are designed to thoroughly prepare you for your birth, whatever your birth place: home, hospital, or birth center. The course includes instruction on basic labor vocabulary to help demystify “hospital speak” and to help equip Dad/Partner, who is often less familiar with pregnancy and birth lingo, for meaningful conversations about birth planning. Past participants have reported that one of their favorite things about the class is that they and their partners are now TALKING about their upcoming labor and birth. Our discussion of the stages of labor will help both Mom/Birthing Parent, with what to expect IN labor, and Dad/Partner, with what to expect AT labor. Class will include practical experience with coping techniques, for the laboring parent and comfort measures and labor support so partners will know what to do to support their loved one through labor and when and how to do it. To help you be a good consumer in labor, class will include information regarding the benefits/risks of, and alternatives to, obstetric procedures along with techniques for navigating hospital politics and policies, an essential skill for those birthing in hospital or at home/birth center. You will learn not only how to prepare a birth plan, but also how to be sure your birth plan stands out in the minds of those who read it. Classes include access to an online reference page full of articles, handouts, and links to additional information and resources, collected and developed over 20 years, to help you in your preparations and encourage you in your choices.
